MACOMB, IL — Twelve years ago in New York City, a golf program was launched to help introduce the game to youth across the world. Two years later, Western Illinois University brought the innovative program to its campus.
The First Tee program was established November 1997 by the PGA of America, the Ladies Professional Golf Association and the U.S. Golf Association. The First Tee program at Western’s Harry Mussatto Golf Course began in 1999 for the purpose of providing youngsters with excellent facilities, quality instruction from golf professionals and the development of honesty, integrity, respect for tradition, etiquette, sportsmanship, self esteem, self-discipline, confidence and solid work ethic.
This year’s First Tee program, for students ages seven through 17, will be held at Western’s course from 9-11 a.m. on Mondays and Thursdays, beginning Monday, June 15 and concluding Thursday, July 23.
During the six-week program, participants will learn and practice the fundamentals of the golf swing; have free access to the driving range, the nine-hole pitch and putt course and the putting green during selected times at the Harry Mussatto Golf Course; join in the life skills curriculum developed for their age group by Virginia Commonwealth University faculty members; receive a First Tee Card qualifying them for discount rates at selected courses; and develop a lifelong appreciation for the game of golf.
“Individual responsibility, honesty, integrity and confidence are all among the traits that can help a young person on the road to success,” said First Tee Coordinator Lia Lukkarinen.
The cost of the program is $40 per student. Additional family members may participate for $20 each. To register by Friday, June 12, drop off or send a check, payable to The First Tee of Western Illinois University, along with participant(s) name, address, age, phone number, date of birth and grade (Fall 2009) to: Lia Lukkarinen, Harry Mussatto Golf Course, 1215 Tower Road, Macomb, IL 61455.
