MACOMB, IL — Recent Western Illinois University graduate Alex Lake (Arlington Heights, IL), a graphic communication major, is a “quack” shot when it comes to T-shirt design. Lake’s winning design — based on the early Nintendo game “Duck Hunt” — “brought down” first place in the “Leisure Service” category in the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association’s T-shirt and Apparel Competition at NIRSA’s annual conference in April. Lake created the design for Campus Recreation’s Duck Club, an intramural swimming incentive program at WIU.
According to Jody Zscheck, office support associate at Campus Recreation, Lake worked at Western’s Campus Recreation from Fall 2006 through his graduation in Spring 2009.
Campus Recreation also received a first place award in NIRSA’s “Special Events” category for a Big Pink Volleyball T-shirt design. Zscheck noted the design was based on the board game theme employed for Fall 2008′s Big Pink Volleyball tournament, which is a breast cancer fundraiser that takes places at WIU during the Fall semester.
WIU alumnus Matt Malinoski (New Lenox, IL), who graduated from Western in Spring 2008, designed the T-shirt for the “Special Events” category.
Malinoski also won the first place award in the “Humorous” category in the 2008 NIRSA T-shirt and Apparel Competition for his design of a duck duct-taped to the back of a T-shirt for Campus Recreation’s 2008 Duck Club.
“This is the third time NIRSA has rewarded Matt for his creativity,” noted Judy Yeast, associate director of Campus Recreation. “His 2007 Duck Club T-shirt design also won first place.”
