MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University Campus Greens and Sodexo will premiere the film “Carbon Nation” at 7 p.m. in Morgan Hall 109 on the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, Thursday, April 22. Western is one of only 150 outlets where the film is premiering, according to Eva Galbraith, Sodexo marketing manager, who arranged for WIU to premier the film with its director Peter Byck. The event is open free to the public.
“Even if you doubt the severity of the impact of climate change or just don’t buy it at all, this is still a compelling and relevant film that illustrates how solutions to climate change also address other social, economic and national security issues, including collapsing rural economies,” said David Casagrande, associate professor of anthropology at WIU. “Starting out from a pessimistic beginning of how serious the challenges are, ‘Carbon Nation’ is a fundamentally optimistic film about potential solutions.”
A sneak preview of the film at the Environmental Film Festival in Washington D.C. March 28 generated rave reviews, Casagrande added. The presentation style includes engaging graphics and a sprinkling of humor that make this an entertaining documentary. Topics include wind power and rural economies, other types of renewable energy, energy efficiency and land use changes (both in protecting rain forests and changing farming).
A panel discussion will be held immediately following the film presentation. For more information, contact Casagrande at DG-Casagrande@wiu.edu.
