Teachers Seminar Offered at WIU-Quad Cities Oct. 23

October 1, 2010

MACOMB, IL – - Western Illinois University is hosting a program, “Classroom Management: Practical Strategies for the Classroom,” designed for teachers to gain better control in creating a positive learning environment.

The program will be held Saturday, Oct. 23 at WIU’s Quad Cities campus in Moline. The schedule begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m., and includes a lunch break from noon-1 p.m. Participants will be rewarded with their Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDUs) certificates.

Teachers who instruct in elementary, junior and senior high schools are invited to learn more about methods they can effectively use to create a positive learning environment, intervene in disruptive behavior, and regain focus with their students. This workshop is designed to help teachers manage their classrooms more effectively, and is worth five CPDUs; all Illinois public school teachers are eligible. Teachers must indicate interest in receiving CPDUs in the appropriate area of the registration form.

Howard Hyde, who has instructed and worked with high-risk youth as a teacher and dean, is the featured instructor. Hyde teaches a classroom management course for undergraduate and graduate students at WIU during the fall semester.

Upon successful completion of this program, participants will be able to apply practical rules and procedures; identify common causes for, and the possible repercussions of “problem student” behaviors; identify classroom management principles and theories; and engage in consistent and longitudinal self-reflection on classroom management with the aim of improving instructional and behavioral management responses to student behaviors.

Registration is due Monday, Oct. 18 and space is limited to 55 participants. Cost is $99 for the course, which includes learning materials, workshop attendance, and CPDUs. Registration forms are available online on the WIU School of Distance Learning website at www.wiu.edu/distance_learning; click on “Non-Credit Programs-Professional Development” and then “Conferences and Workshops.” Click to download the PDF link for the Oct. 23 event.
