WIU-QC Provides New Testing Site at RI Arsenal

June 8, 2009

ROCK ISLAND/MOLINE, IL – A new partnership agreement was signed today (June 8) between the Rock Island Arsenal (RIA) and Western Illinois University-Quad Cities, which allows current –and potential — college students interested in completing college proficiency exams to complete the exams at the Rock Island Arsenal.

According to Joe Rives, vice president for Quad Cities, planning and technology, the WIU-QC exam facility, which is open to the public, is the first testing site in the Illinois Quad Cities. The agreement between Western and the Arsenal allows individuals the opportunity to complete an exam, such as a College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test, in person in Building 56,
Room 103 on Arsenal Island.

“This is yet another way to bring educational opportunities to one of the largest employers in the Quad Cities,” Rives added. “We hope the partnership will help expand the existing educational opportunities to Arsenal employees and the entire Quad Cities region.”

Interested individuals, including Arsenal employees, should contact Jacquelyn Holan, WIU-QC academic adviser, at (309) 762-1988. Holan, whose office is at the Arsenal, can assist in administering exams, provide course and program information and advise students how to register for classes at Western.

“I am absolutely delighted to enter into this agreement with WIU-Quad Cities. This partnership makes it much easier for our military personnel and civilian employees to seek advice on education, complete college proficiency exams and register for college courses,” said Joel Himsl, Garrison manager for the Rock Island Arsenal.

This is the second agreement between the Arsenal and WIU-Quad Cities. In January 2008, the two entities joined forces to allow members of the RIA community to seek undergraduate and graduate degrees offered at the WIU-QC campus in accordance with a Department of Defense Directive on Voluntary Education for Military Personnel.

“We are pleased to enter into this second partnership with the Arsenal. This new agreement gives students in this region even more chances to succeed by providing a high quality, affordable public higher education close to home,” Rives added. “These partnerships continue our commitment to our community partners and the region.”
