Rock Band Kansas to Perform with WIU Orchestra

November 23, 2009
MACOMB, IL – - The legendary rock band Kansas will team up with Western Illinois University’s Symphony Orchestra for a 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2 performance in Western Hall.

Kansas, whose song “Dust in the Wind” was a million-selling gold single, has produced eight gold albums, three sextuple-platinum albums and one platinum live album. The group was consistently on the billboard charts throughout the 1970s and 80s. “Carry on Wayward Son” was the most played track on classic rock radio as of 1997; and in 1998 Kansas released an orchestral CD, “Always Never the Same,” with the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios in London.

“This is a terrific opportunity for the Western Illinois orchestra students to perform with a renowned rock band. Concerts with orchestras and rock bands are becoming more frequent, but this will be the first time that I know of that the WIU Symphony has done such a program,” said Director of Orchestral Activities at WIU Richard Hughey.

“Our students are really excited and looking forward to an exceptional experience. They will only rehearse with the band itself for an hour prior to the Wednesday evening concert, but the band’s conductor will rehearse with them Nov. 30,” Hughey added.

Tickets to the Bureau of Cultural Affairs concert are $35, $30 and $10 for the public; and $30, $25 and $10 for seniors 62 and older and students. Call the Hainline Box Office at (309) 298-2900 from noon-5 p.m. weekdays or go to wiu.edu/bca to order tickets online.
