MACOMB, IL – - “The Cartographer’s Dilemma,” a compilation of maps, myths and machines in images and sounds, is the opening exhibit for the Western Illinois University Art Gallery Spring 2010 series. The show will run through Thursday, Feb. 18.
A free public reception will be held from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26 at the Art Gallery.
Curators of the show are Paul Guzzardo, Jesse Codling and David Walczyk. Their respective works include urban and graphic design, documentary film, music-video remix and computational media. Through the use of wall graphics, multimedia projections, sculpture, painting and touch screen technology, the artists examine the digital fog of image and sound and how it affects our democratic public sphere and civic identity. They question why existing noetic economies (knowledge systems) discourage the creation of a public sphere that promotes contest, collaborations and creativity. Content for the exhibit is drawn from literary and journalistic sources that include Edgar Allan Poe, Samuel Clemens, Jorge Luis Borges, Robert Kaplan and Facebook.
Western’s Art Gallery is open free to the public from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays and from 6-8 p.m. Tuesdays when school is in session. For more information, visit wiu.edu/ArtGallery or phone (309) 298-1587.
