Grossman is in a battle with Alex Brink just to make the team as a third-stringer behind Matt Schaub and Dan Orlovsky. There’s reason to believe that Brink is the Texans’ third most accurate quarterback.

“We played against Jay in Denver, it may have been his first start,” Holmgren said. “He was a little wild, but he has really good ability. He can really throw it. And I didn’t begin to comment on how he’s developed and things like that because, but he went to the Pro Bowl. And he’s a young quarterback. And I know this, those guys are hard to find. They really are.

“If you have one then you have to cultivate it and build up a trust and ride that horse all the way. And it surprised me a little bit, to be honest. I think it’s a wonderful thing for the Bears. I think the Bears have always been a difficult team to play, and their defense has always been very, very strong. And they’ve always had some question marks over the years at quarterback, and this seems to have solved that problem. I expect it to be a very good thing for Chicago.”

Without Ron Rivera the Bears defense has not been the same. The Bears have the highest paid defense in the league and are getting older. This season we will learn how much Ron Rivera was key to the defense success of the 2006 Super Bowl team the seasons prior.

1) Will the Bear’s defense rebound this year?

2) Will San Diego’s defense, now headed by Ron Rivera prove out his coaching ability?

“The man who took over, and who will lead the unit in ’09, is Ron Rivera. Rivera has guided one defense to a Super Bowl, and looks to double that number this year.

Helping Rivera will be a couple of former assistants from Chicago in Don Johnson (defensive line) and Steve Wilks (secondary). The team will also benefit from two pass-rushers in the lineup—the return of three-time Pro Bowler Shawne Merriman and first-round draft pick Larry English.”
